I truly love Christmas! I love it because I love the spirit and true meaning of Christmas. I also love energy of Christmas in New York. Sure, the tourists and hustle and bustle are not at the top of my list, but I love everything else - the window displays, energy, lights, parties, food, and I love giving gifts! I also adore children! (Yes, I am an emotional sap.)
From late September until the first week of January I am insanely busy. This is what I aptly call my "busy season". This is the time of year when I literally work 7 days a week and usually 2 jobs a day.... and I love it. buy contact lenses online I would rather be busy than not. I like the variety, the creativity and working with so many people. One of my jobs since 2002 has been as a costumer for Santaland and the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Santaland:
I love this job because it gives me the opportunity to see old friends and make new ones. I probably work with about 300 people at this job. Some I get to know quite well, some I may only know for one season. It takes a certain personality to be an elf! I get to work with some of the most energetic, crazy and funny people...I mean elves.
This year was especially memorable because one of the elves is also an elementary school teacher. Her elf name is FooFoo. She was telling me a story of a class that wouldn't be receiving gifts from Santa this year because their teacher was in the hospital and didn't turn in the letters on time. I asked how many children there were and how much time was there to collect gifts. She told me there were 33 children and all had written a letter to Santa. I had one week to get it all done.
I asked for copies of the letters and told her I'd do my best. I cannot tell you how amazing this experience was! I collected donations from employers and co-workers past and present. It is funny, the people you think will be generous and the people you think might not be may just surprise you! I felt like a detective trying to locate the gifts. I felt like an accountant trying to calculate the funds and how to accomplish my task with the funds that I had. And finally, I felt like Santa as I checked my lists and packed each child's gift bag.
I would like to point out that these were not your average "gimme" letters. These children asked for school books so they could do their homework, a jacket or clothing to stay warm, and toys or clothing for their siblings. In one case, a little boy asked for socks for his Dad so he could go to work without holes in his socks. Another little girl asked for a poinsetta for her Mother and that was it!
With the donations that I collected and money of my own, I was able to give each child a composition book, a reading book (from their reading list - Magic Treehouse for the boys and Junie B. Jones for the girls), a shirt, a pair of gloves and a toy. When needed, their siblings got an article of clothing and/or toy). My friend Pamela helped me lug some of the bags as we shopped for toys. Thank goodness for Pamela!
As I packed each bag I felt so amazingly good. FooFoo and her fellow elves came to pick up the bags and she was thrilled! She said she'll send a class photo and thank you notes from the children once school starts again. I can't wait to hear about all of the children's Christmas experiences and to email the thank you notes accompanied by the photo of the children to those generous people who donated and helped give these children a wonderful Christmas! It puts a smile on my face just thinking about it as I write. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
